Young people

Young people need and deserve our support, not just as the adults of tomorrow, but for who they are and what they’re going through today. We support young people through a number of services to provide the right support at the right time.

What we do for young people

As children grow, their developmental needs change, but transitions remain as significant and challenging as in the early years, if not more so. And this is a very challenging time to be a young person.

The ongoing cost of living crisis means many young people often go hungry. Funding for youth clubs has been decimated over the last two decades. Societal and cultural pressures leave young people vulnerable to online harms. Children and young people who are looked after by the state are especially at risk. In the UK, half a million children suffer abuse every year, that’s 62 every day. Over a million shoulder significant caring responsibilities for family members. 1 in 6 children and young people have a mental health condition.

Young people need and deserve our support, not just as the adults of tomorrow, but for who they are and what they’re going through today. Many do not have wider family networks who can support them and open up opportunities as they grow.

Services for Young People

Family Action runs a number of support services of different kinds. Whether it’s long-term mentoring through our Friendship Works programme, or employability skills and training through HeadStart, we always aim to meet young people where they are, listen and respect, and offer the right support at the right time. We offer art therapy and counselling to young people who have experienced trauma or loss. Our support services for Young Carers are very responsive to the needs of the young people they serve, offering holistic support for the family so that young people really feel able to pursue their own needs, 1:1 mentoring and counselling, peer support groups, and opportunities for young people to raise awareness of the issues that matter to them.

Co-production, meaning that young people have a real say in the design and delivery of the support on offer, is central to the way we approach work with young people.

When you’re going through a crisis and nobody else is listening, Friendship works are always there to let you know you’re not alone.
