About this service

Child to parent violence (CPV) is a pattern of physical, psychological and emotional behaviour seen in children and young people who find it hard to regulate their feelings and sometimes have a great need to gain control over their parents or carers. It’s a serious issue for many families and one often misunderstood and overlooked.
Despite being a common experience, lots of adoptive parents find it hard to acknowledge or get the support they need but our Child to Parent Violence Service is here to help.

There has been no advice as valuable as the ideas and delivery of this course, even if some of it feels alien – hang on in there.

More Information

We provide a wide range of specialist child to parent violence services for parents and carers approved for funding by the Adoption & Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF).

One-to-one support

We provide intensive one-to-one support for parents and carers experiencing child-to-parent violence. Using Non-Violent Resistance strategies, we help you respond to and manage violent or out-of-control behaviour safely and effectively. Sessions can be tailored to individual need and are facilitated by a qualified therapist or an accredited Non Violence Resistance practitioner in either a clinical setting or your family home.

Contact us to find out more about our one-to-one support sessions.

Group support

Our Child to Parent Violence (CPV) support groups provide a safe space to share and connect with others in a similar situation. They also help parents and carers learn Non Violent Resistance (NVR) strategies that can help manage out-of-control and violent behaviours including, how to de-escalate conflict, increase parental presence and how to make a stand. We work collaboratively and focus on solutions to situations giving parents and carers the skills needed to avoid responding to situations in a reactive way.

Weekly group sessions typically last 1.5 hours and are part of an 8-10 week programme that includes short presentations, sharing of experiences, discussion and roleplays. Groups are facilitated by our expert Child & Family Therapists and Parent Graduates who are adoptive parents or special guardians themselves and bring a wealth of lived experience and relevant knowledge.

After each session we’ll give you some helpful ‘homework’ tasks to reinforce some of the learning from the groups and for you to apply to real life situations. After the final group session, further support may be available through follow up groups.

If you are a professional looking to commission a support group for your RAA or local authority, please contact us to discuss your needs further.

Training

We also deliver commissioned training, both online and in person, on a range of Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) topics, including introductory courses and more specialised areas of practice.

If you are a professional looking to commission training for your RAA or local authority, please contact us to discuss your needs further.
