Family Action launches new Digital Hub to support families in Welland

30 April 2026

Families in the Welland area of Peterborough are set to benefit from a new Digital Hub launched by Family Action at Woodfield Park Community Centre, offering free, friendly support to help local people build confidence with everyday online skills.

The Digital Hub forms part of Family Action’s Woodfield Park CommUnity Project, which provides early help and community based support for local families.

The hub has been launched through Connecting Cambridge and is funded by government funding and Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services (PCVS). It aims to support residents who may be digitally excluded, particularly families on low incomes and older members of the community, by improving access to technology and practical digital support.

The launch event welcomed families, local residents, partners and volunteers, giving people the chance to explore what the Digital Hub offers. Attendees were able to use laptops and tablets, speak to an IT specialist, and take part in a fun, interactive cyber security activity led by a local police officer, designed around an escape room style challenge to encourage safe online behaviour.

Visitors also took part in a mini CV skills session, with practical guidance on using digital tools to support job searching, training and employability, an important focus for parents and carers looking to improve opportunities for their families.

The Digital Hub will now run as a regular weekly drop in every Thursday from 11am to 1pm. Residents can come along for support with:

• Using laptops and tablets
• Writing or updating CVs
• Accessing NHS and other essential services online
• Online shopping and everyday digital tasks

Sessions are informal, relaxed and designed to feel welcoming. No previous experience is needed, and families are welcome to attend together.

The Digital Hub complements the range of support already offered through Family Action’s Woodfield Park CommUnity Project, including the FOOD Club, which helps families stretch their budgets by accessing affordable food, and weekly community drop in sessions held every Tuesday, providing a safe and supportive space for families to connect, get advice and reduce isolation.

Parvinder Wahiwala, Community Development Lead from Family Action, said

Many families tell us that being offline makes everyday life much harder, from booking GP appointments and managing school communications to applying for jobs or accessing support. The Digital Hub is about removing those barriers and helping families feel more confident and in control.

Having the Digital Hub alongside our FOOD Club and Tuesday community drop ins means families can come to one trusted place in the heart of Welland and get support with a range of needs, all in a friendly and familiar environment.

Refreshments at the launch gave families time to speak with Family Action staff, volunteers and local partners, reinforcing Woodfield Park Community Centre’s role as a welcoming community hub for families in Welland.

No booking is required for the Digital Hub. Residents are encouraged to simply drop in at: Woodfield Park Community Centre (The Charteris Centre), Normanton Road, Welland, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE1 4XE.
