About this service

We support parents/carers of children and young people recently diagnosed or awaiting assessment for autism/ADHD. We do this by helping parents to better understand what behaviour is communicating, offering practical strategies and supporting parents/carers to become effective advocates within the wider family, in educational settings and in life. We also offer support to families seeking advice about how to start the journey and get a child or young person onto the assessment pathway.

More Information

Our team is commissioned by Norfolk and Waveney NHS Integrated Care Board to offer support and advice, resources and signposting to parents and carers of children and young people awaiting assessment for, or recently diagnosed, with autism or ADHD.

We aim to help parents and carers to: better understand behaviour and what may be being communicated; to develop their own toolbox of strategies for supporting their child or young person; and to be advocates for their child or young person within the wider family, in education and in life. We offer support to parents/carers by listening and giving advice and guidance on a wide range of topics linked to neurodivergence including behaviour, change and routine, sleep, anxiety, low demand, schools and education.

We offer:

  • telephone support,
  • free courses (Plan Bee),
  • monthly workshops focused on a variety of topics,
  • helpful monthly newsletters including events and useful articles,
  • a supportive Facebook group,
  • friendly and informal drop-in support groups to meet other parents/carers,
  • access to lots of information and resources, and
  • signposting to other relevant services

Plan Bee is a free 3-week course to support parents/carers to understand how neurodivergence is affecting the thinking of their child or young person and impacting on their behaviour. No diagnosis is necessary, this course is particularly useful for parents with children still awaiting assessment with the Neurodevelopmental Service. Plan Bee is delivered face-to-face in venues across Norfolk and Waveney as well as online. Plan Bee begins by reminding us that 'when a flower does not bloom, we do not try to fix the flower, but look at how we can change the environment to help the flower to flourish.'

Puffins (4 weeks, Norfolk) & Cygnet (6 weeks, Waveney). These courses are very popular with parents/carers where the child/young person already has a diagnosis and are delivered by a range of professionals with expertise in autism.
