Six years of FamilyLine – for every family and any family issue

20 January 2025

The national helpline FamilyLine marks its sixth year of operation this year. Family Action’s Royal Patron, Catherine HRH The Princess of Wales, launched the helpline in 2019 in the 150th year of the charity’s history. Sponsorship from insurance company LV= up to 2025 helped expand its services to include free telephone befriending and telephone counselling service, via specially trained FamilyLine operators or supporters.

Joanna, a mum of three, shared her experience:

I felt completely overwhelmed like I was failing my three young children. But as I built a relationship with my supporter, I noticed she never judged me. She was always there to listen.

A generous £100,000 donation from the Poundland Foundation in 2024 allowed FamilyLine to grow and support more families, with a grant aimed at improving service speed and quality through the use of a fast-track case management system and better analytics, which will be a significant development once launched.

Today, FamilyLine has a three-tiered support offer. Tier one is a growing library of online self-help resources, covering common challenges like parenting, family conflict, relationship issues, financial worries, SEND provision, and mental health that can be accessed via the website.

For those who would like to talk to someone, tier two is the free helpline that can be accessed via phone, web chat, text and email, and for those needing additional support, they can be referred to our tier three service which is up to six sessions of telephone counselling or up to 10 sessions of telephone befriending.

A mother of a 16-year-old who called due to her son’s behavioural issues said,

The befriending sessions were really useful. The befriender helped me focus on options that could help support my son… I’m so grateful for the support.

FamilyLine aims to be the first-line support for any family issue with trained operators offering not only emotional support but also information and guidance that can be difficult to find when distressed or in crisis. Three of the top reasons people are contacting us for are relationship issues, mental and emotional health and parenting support.

The launch of the new Family Action website has made it easier for more people to more easily contact FamilyLine, with the number of web chats tripling in the three months post launch.

It’s no coincidence that FamilyLine was launched in January – a month that many of us find overwhelming. Our FamilyLine Head of Helpline, Ayse Hassan urges people to reach out even if it’s just for a chat. As she says,

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, worried, or upset about any aspect of your family life, whether here in the present or something from your past, FamilyLine is here for you. We offer free emotional support, information, and guidance on all aspects of family issues – including, parenting, caring, financial worries, and more.
