Giving a grant can be a lifeline for a family and make a world of difference when it’s needed the most. It could cover essentials like a cooker, fridge, clothes, food or a safe, warm bed. This is one Mum’s story of how a grant helped her to move forward after a devasting time in her life.
Ally fled domestic violence with her five year old son who has autism. She had got herself out of the abusive situation and been helped into new accommodation but then was sexually assaulted by a man she had thought of as a friend.
Ally wasn’t able to call on other friends or family for help at that point, so she called FamilyLine and one of our trained support volunteers listened as she processed the overwhelm and grief.
As the attack had taken place on her bed, Ally had thrown it out and had been sleeping on an old mattress on the floor for at least a month by the time we got her call.
FamilyLine – a lifeline
After offering emotional support, we made Ally aware of other support she could access through Family Action and other local services and helped her navigate her options.
Having heard the whole story, we identified that Ally was eligible for a Family Action Open Doors grant and we were able to get her the money for a new bed and bedding within just a few days.
Thank you so much. I feel overwhelmed by the support you were able to provide in such a short time. You do not know how much of a difference you have made to me and my son.
Every grant helps to alleviate stress for someone in crisis, so they have breathing space to work through the bigger issues they’re facing, such as illness, strained relationships or even fleeing abuse. Donating towards Family Action’s grant scheme will directly support families to rebuild their lives every day.
