Role Based Details

In the community or at family homes.

Who does this role help?

Children, Families, Parents

Family Support volunteers help families manage complex challenges at a time when they need some additional support. Working in partnership with our staff team, volunteers meet up with a family on a regular basis to deliver a personalised package of support. With the help of the volunteer, families gain the confidence and knowledge they need to face their challenges together.

Who you will be helping

The challenges our families face can lead to them feeling very isolated. It can be difficult for them to get out or engage in local activities in the community. Family members often suffer from poor mental or emotional health. Together, these issues can erode family members’ self-esteem and confidence, and their challenges can feel overwhelming.

The difference you will make

Our Family Support volunteers help family members develop confidence, knowledge and skills so that problems become more manageable.

You will have regular contact with family members. This could be at their home or in the community, or by virtually by phone or online.

You may support family members to engage with local services and activities, by going with them to groups or appointments and encouraging them to participate.

You may work with families to identify goals and help them achieve positive change. You may work to promote positive emotional wellbeing with family members, helping build their confidence and self-esteem.

Your support will help family members feel more in control of their situation, and better equipped to face future challenges.

Typical tasks within this role:

  • Family volunteers focus on a specific family or handful of families.
  • Support is provided 1:1 or in small group settings.
  • Family volunteers offer a kind of ‘hand-holding’ support, enabling families to overcome barriers.
  • This role needs good listeners who can empathise – it’s not always about solving the problem, sometimes it’s just about being there.

Who are we looking for?

There is no typical Family Action volunteer. We want our volunteers to be as diverse as the people we support. We need volunteers with a range of life experiences, skills and knowledge to. In return for giving your time and talents, you will receive quality training, ongoing support, and the reward of knowing that you are making a real difference. This role will particularly suit volunteers who are:

  • Empathetic, non-judgemental and good at listening
  • Good at building positive, trusting relationships
  • Passionate about improving outcomes for family members
  • Are able to understand the complex challenges our families face
  • Can demonstrate commitment, reliability and consistency
  • Are able to keep accurate records
  • Understanding of the need for confidentiality when working with vulnerable families
  •  Willing to abide by Family Action’s policies and procedures.

What’s in it for you?

Family Action volunteers tell us that volunteering with us can be challenging at times, but it is also very rewarding. Many of our Volunteers also report that volunteering has helped them with:

  • Being part of a team and becoming a part of Family Action, a national charity with 150 years of experience supporting families.
  • Support and guidance from project coordinator including 1-1 and group supervision
  • Regular training and development opportunities
  • Opportunity to improve future employment prospects, for example in Family Support or related areas
  • Developing new skills; increased confidence and self-esteem
  • Making a difference to the lives of people in your community.

All Family Action volunteers receive full training and access to ongoing supervision and support as long as they are in the role.
